Herald and Delores Johnson

Our Mission

Herald and Delores Johnson Our Mission Herald and Delores Johnson had a passion for helping others, and worked to provide resources to those in need. As Charter members of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, Delores used her accounting skills to assist with the financial position of the church and later founded the TUCC Credit Union, while Herald provided oversight as an electrical engineer to the facilities obtained by the church, including its 2000 seat sanctuary. Together, they combined their efforts to provide money to students attending college and helped them to not only “to go to college, but to get through college”. After their passing,  the HeralDelores Johnson Foundation was founded to honor their legacy.

The HDJ Scholarship Foundation is committed to empowering students who choose to pursue their education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Recognizing the unique challenges that many students face in financing their higher education, the foundation aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with college attendance.
The HDJ Scholarship Foundation stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, dedicated to ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder students’ aspirations to attend and succeed in college. Through its efforts, the foundation not only honors the legacy of Delores and Herald Johnson but also fosters a brighter future for countless students committed to their education.

Our targeted key aspects of the HDJ Foundation’s Mission include:

Financial Support

The foundation provides scholarships that cover various expenses incurred during college, such as tuition, fees, books, and supplies. This financial assistance is crucial in helping students focus on their studies rather than worrying about how to pay for their education.

Encouraging Persistence and Completion

The scholarships are designed not just to facilitate entry into college but also to support students throughout their academic journey, helping them to persist and ultimately graduate. This focus on completion is essential, as financial strain is a significant factor in students' decisions to leave college before earning their degrees.

Holistic Development

Beyond financial assistance, the foundation may also offer resources such as mentorship, networking opportunities, and workshops aimed at personal and professional development. This holistic approach ensures that students are equipped with the skills and support necessary to thrive both academically and in their future careers.

Community Impact

By investing in the education of students at HBCUs, the foundation contributes to the broader community's growth and development. Educated graduates can become leaders and change-makers, positively influencing their communities and paving the way for future generations.
