Who we are

Our Story

The HeralDelores Johnson Scholarship Fund began in 2001 in memory of Delores Johnson who had a profound passion for providing financial assistance to students attending colleges and universities. The mission continued through 2015, and after the passing of Herald Johnson, Sr., the HeralDelores Johnson Scholarship was founded. The HDJ Scholarship Foundation has awarded thousands of dollars to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities to ensure resources are available to recipients as they continue their educational pursuits.

Herald and Delores Johnson

Our Mission

Herald and Delores Johnson Our Mission Herald and Delores Johnson had a passion for helping others, and worked to provide resources to those in need. As Charter members of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, Delores used her accounting skills to assist with the financial position of the church and later founded the TUCC Credit Union, while Herald provided oversight as an electrical engineer to the facilities obtained by the church, including its 2000 seat sanctuary. Together, they combined their efforts to provide money to students attending college and helped them to not only “to go to college, but to get through college”. After their passing,  the HeralDelores Johnson Foundation was founded to honor their legacy.
An Annual Dinner Honoring Educators

HDJ Foundation Annual Educator's Gala

The HDJ Foundation honors educators each year at our annual Educators Gala, celebrating their leadership and diverse talents. We understand that the vital contributions of educators often go unrecognized, and this event serves to highlight their skills and dedication. By honoring educators, we affirm their passion for their profession and inspire our graduates to pursue careers in education, particularly aiming to increase the representation of teachers of color in our classrooms.
